THE GOLDEN GIRLS
won an Emmy its first year on the air. TVs favorite silver
foxes Beatrice Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Betty White and
Estelle Getty star as elderly roommates on a mission to
prove life really does begin at 65. In the first season, the
women have romantic prospects that turn out to be more
challenging than they originally seemed. In "Second
Motherhood," Blanche likes her new boyfriend until she
discovers he has several small children. "The
Engagement" sees Harry proposing to Blanche, but Rose
has strong doubts about him. For the episode titled
"Guess Who's Coming to the Wedding?" Dorothy
grudgingly agrees to see her hated ex-husband at their
daughter's wedding, and in "Rose the Prude," Rose
goes on a cruise with a man who wants to share the same
room. To the show's credit, THE GOLDEN GIRLS, explores many
topics relevant to modern senior citizens, many of which
were previously unexplored in television and film. |

One of
the most popular television shows of the 1980s, THE GOLDEN
GIRLS was created by television writer Susan Harris (SOAP).
The show centered on four elderly single women living in the
same house together, all played by sitcom veterans: sensible
Dorothy (Bea Arthur), sweet but stupid Rose (Betty White),
lusty Blanche (Rue McClanahan), and Dorothy's outspoken mother
Sophia (Estelle Getty). The program was nominated for many
Emmy and Golden Globe awards, and was consistently in
Nielsen's top 10 for its entire run, garnering both critical
acclaim and public popularity. It also proved daring for its
time, tackling sensitive political issues and for the mere
fact it was a prime time show whose characters were much older
than television's most desired demographic. SEASON TWO
collects all 25 episodes from the program's second year, and
features guest stars such as Burt Reynolds, George Clooney,
and Rita Moreno. |
