The series stars James Gandolfini in a career-making
performance as Tony Soprano, a Mafia leader who is
having trouble dealing with his mother and family
and so starts to see a shrink. The terrific
supporting cast features Edie Falco as Tony's
beleaguered wife, Carmela; Lorraine Bracco as Tony's
put-upon psychiatrist, Dr. Melfi; Michael Imperioli
as loose cannon Christopher Moltisanti; Steven Van
Zandt as Silvio, owner of the Bada-Bing; and the
incomparable Nancy Marchand, in one of the great
television performances, as Livia Soprano, Tony's
conniving, controlling mother. The writing,
directing, and acting are impeccable, making for one
of the most enjoyable viewing events of the 1990s.

Tony Soprano returns, as
does the entire cast (at least those that have not
been whacked) in a box set chronicling the complete
second season of the highly acclaimed HBO series. Tony
continues to have family troubles--both immediate and
otherwise--as he adjusts to being the new don of one
of the most notorious crime syndicates in America.
This season is packed with violent action, hilarious
comedy, and the signature unspoken sexual longings
between Tony (James Gandolfini) and his psychiatrist
Dr. Melfi (Lorraine Bracco). This season also includes
the first intimacy seen between Tony and his wife
Carmela (Edie Falco) and the death of Barbara's
father-in-law.

drama, THE SOPRANOS. Some highlights of this season
are Gloria and Tony's sexual encounter at the snake
exhibit, a GLADIATOR-inspired barroom brawl, and the

apart. Like fine wine, THE SOPRANOS only gets better
with age. Viewers can only hope that creator David
Chase will continue to create new story lines that
will keep these characters in our lives for years to
come--if they don't get whacked first. |
